Now that the lights and tinsel have been put away, the aftermath of the Holiday Season can find some people struggling more than ever. Take time for self-care. Below is a simple/realistic list of self-care resolutions that may help bring about a healthier you for the New Year.
Get moving. There are so many benefits to physical activity, such as reducing anxiety and depression, better sleep, and better control of emotions. Join a gym, find a walking partner, or put on your favorite music and dance through your household chores.
Read a book. Reading can reduce stress, improve your cognitive function and allow you to “get away” without leaving your home. Go ahead, find a good book and a comfy nook and take a look at the latest best seller or revisit an old favorite.
Take a break from social media. Social media has been shown to have negative effects on mental health. Break free from the negativity. Realize that most people don’t have it as good as they portray themselves on social media. Everyone struggles with something at sometime in their lives, but most don’t share that part on social media.
Get involved. Helping others can bring about joy. Find a soup kitchen, animal shelter or other organization that means something to you, and watch your mental health improve. Volunteering has been shown to increase life satisfaction and happiness, as well as lower symptoms of depression, stress and anxiety.
Experience a change of scenery. Take a vacation or a (staycation), if finances are a source of stress. Explore your own “backyard” or just take a walk in a local park and enjoy the beauty of nature around you. These little mini escapes from your everyday life can lift your spirits.
Limit alcohol intake. While alcohol may numb those bad feelings temporarily, alcohol in excess can worsen depression and anxiety overall.
Look for reasons to be grateful, big or small. Recognize them in every part of your day and jot them down in a gratitude journal. This will help you develop a habit of recognizing the good.
Spend more time with loved ones or those who make you feel good about yourself. This can help you replace negative feelings with feelings of happiness and love.
Seek professional help. Talking to a counselor is a healthy way to address the stress of life mentally, spiritually, physically and relationally which can create a path towards a happier you. If I can be service, feel free to contact me; I am just a phone call away.
